THOMAS HOUSEWORTH
California's 40th Birthday, September 9th, 1890
Photograph
Taken of the corner of Market and 4th Streets in San Francisco, this photograph captures the city in the midst of its Admission Day celebration.
The California Grizzly sits atop a large street canopy. Under the bear is a large mural with the caption "Land of Old - Land of Gold - Land of '49." Portraits of John Fremont and John Sutter appear on either side of the mural.

OWEN COCHRAN COY
Photograph of first Bear Flag, 1846
Pictorial History of California, 1925
Quotation:
TRACY I. STORER AND LLOYD P. TEVIS
"The California Grizzly," Pacific Discovery, 1953
"General Vallejo, perhaps still smarting from his experiences during the Bear Flag Rebellion, did not approve of an unrestrained bear. He argued that if the bear were to be kept on the Seal, it should be represented as secured firmly by a lasso in the hands of a Spanish-Californian vaquero."

|
|

This original watercolor features a cute brown bear holding the California flag. He is standing at what appears to be the Golden Gate (pre bridge, of course) with the ships steaming in. It is captioned Hurra! for 1915.
It measures but 4-1/4 x 2-1/2" and is in excellent condition. We have no way of knowing, but this seems to be the sort of thing that might have been sold by an enterprising soul as a souvenir from the Panama Pacific International Expo, held in San Francisco during 1915.

Details about the new flag:
-The Golden bear has been improved to be more "golden".
-The disturbing tree stumps have been removed from the
green patch under the bear.
-"California Republic" is now simply "California"
-The red star has been relocated from left to the right of the flag
and now represents the old Eastern establishment. The bear has
turned it's back on the corrupt empire that the United States Government has become.

A Jack Tone Ranch scene....the Old Barn roof. Gerard Hammer (assisted by sons Robert &
Gerard and a family friend) painted the roof in the Tone family tradition,
to celebrate California's Sesquicentennial -- and the Jack Tone Ranch's as well --
last year for 150th Anniversary celebration. In 1976, Jack Tone painted the Old Barn roof
with the American flag for America's bicentennial. Bud's (Jack Tone's) grandfather,
Patrick Talbot, started the tradition in 1876 with the American flag for the American centennial.
