"Bear Flag as designed and crudely made by William Todd in June, 1846.
The words, "California Republic" were traced first in ink and then painted.
The letter "i" preceding the letter "c" in the word "Republic" was omitted
in the original design, the mistake being noticed afterward,
the "i" was sketched in over the top of the "c". This drawing was made by
